The 28th annual Festival of Sharing, which raises more than $1 million annually to help people in need, will be at the Missouri State Fairgrounds on Saturday, Oct. 17.
People from many denominations join together in the Festival of Sharing to bring hope and justice to a hurting world through the distribution of emergency “packs” and “kits” that help people in time of need.
Brentwood members will assemble packs–school supplies, emergency cleaning supplies, baby layettes, personal hygiene supplies and more–on Sept. 15. Please check the festival website for a list of the needed supplies and bring donations to the church.
For more information, contact Shirley Nelson or Barbara Lewis.

Brentwood is lucky to have an amazing team of dedicated volunteers who work at the Crosslines food pantry on the first Monday of each month. Their commitment to this service is totally inspirational, and we should all try to be more like these people!
Here’s your chance. Help is needed with the heavy lifting associated with Crosslines service. Specifically, we need someone who can buy groceries on the Friday before Brentwood’s Crosslines day and who can load and haul groceries from church to Crosslines at 7:30 am on Brentwood’s Crosslines days.
Some of the boxes and bags are heavy; others are just unwieldy. Brentwood provides a LOT of food to Crosslines. That is a good thing for our hungry neighbors but a bad thing for our volunteers, many of whom have bad backs.
Want to make a difference in the lives of poor people in our community–and do a good turn for your Brentwood colleagues at the same time? Please call me at 417-868-8520!

The Council of Churches of the Ozarks is celebrating its 40th anniversary, as you know from reading my most recent post.
When you are putting that birthday card in its envelope, remember that everyone likes to get money on their birthday. Through the new Power of Together $40,000 Challenge, every dollar you send to the Council will be matched dollar-for-dollar. So your gift of, say, $500 automatically begins $1,000. How can you not give?
To make sure your gift qualifies for matching funds, write “$40,000 Challenge” in the memo line of your check. Send it to Council of Churches of the Ozarks, 627 N. Glenstone, PO Box 3947, Springfield, MO 65808. You’ll be glad you did.

Brentwood supports the Council of Churches of the Ozarks, an important organization that demonstrates the good side of organized religion.
The Council will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 18, at Drury University and you’re invited. The party includes a free picnic, special music, guest speakers and socializing with church members from around the area.
The most important fact about Council of Churches is not that it is 40 years old but that it provides so many important services to our community.
- Crosslines food pantry
- Ambassadors for Children services for foster kids
- Connections Handyman Services, which builds ramps and performs home repairs for low-income seniors
- Therapeutic Riding of the Ozarks, which offers disabled people an opportunity to ride horses
- Daybreak Adult Daycare
- And more
That is truly something worth celebrating.

Victory Mission’s back to school event is growing… Because of the overwhelming need in our community, this year’s back to school initiative will serve more than 6,000 students, more than doubling last year’s effort.
The event is Aug. 11. Please bring school supplies and gently used clothing to church and place them in the box outside the sanctuary.
If you prefer, drop off school supplies and clothing at the Victory Mission warehouse, 700 W. Chase St., between 8 am and 3 pm Monday through Friday. On Saturday, donations can be made at the Victory Vintage Thrift Store, 824 W. Commercial, between 10 am and 2 pm. Call 864-2246 for more information.
It takes hundreds of volunteers to set up, distribute supplies and clean up after the back to school event. Would your Sunday school class or other group like to help? Or maybe you wish to volunteer on your own? Call Judy at 864-2213 to seize this great opportunity to serve our children.

Brentwood supports Springfield Victory Mission, an important agency that helps people move from poverty to self-sufficiency.
Victory Mission will supply 2,600 underprivileged children with new school supplies, books and clothing at its annual back-to-school event coming up Aug. 11. You know what kids need–pens, pencils, erasers, scissors, glue, rulers, notebooks, school boxes and clothing.
Please bring school supplies and gently used or new clothing to church and put them in the box just outside the sanctuary. Let’s help every child in Springfield feel great on the first day of school.
PS. Money is also welcome!

Brentwood has a number of growing children in our midst, and that means there are lots of clothes being outgrown!
With this in mind, Brentwood is hosting a clothing exchange in the room off the east side of the Chapel. If you have gently used childrens’ clothing, wash it and bring it to the church. If you need clothes for your growing child, come and check out the clothing that has been made available.
Make sure that any clothes you bring for the exchange are still in good condition—this isn’t a place to drop off stuff that nobody else wants.
Any clothing that is not used by those in the church will be donated to the Rainbow Network for use in Nicaragua.
